ℹ️ ➖➖➖ The Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II is an American family of single-seat, single-engine, all-weather stealth multirole combat aircraft that is intended to perform both air superiority and strike missions. It is also able to provide electronic warfare and intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance capabilities. Lockheed Martin is the prime F-35 contractor, with principal partners Northrop Grumman and BAE Systems. The aircraft has three main variants: the conventional takeoff and landing F-35A (CTOL), the short take-off and vertical-landing F-35B (STOVL), and the carrier-based F-35C (CV/CATOBAR).
The F-35A is the conventional takeoff and landing (CTOL) variant intended for the USAF and other air forces. It is the smallest, lightest version and capable of 9 g, the highest of all variants.
📑 ➖➖➖ Norway has bought 52 new F-35A fighter jets. The first aircraft will land in Norway in 2017, and by 2025 the entire combat aircraft fleet will be fully operational.
The F-35 is the backbone of the Armed Forces, and most fighter jets operate under 132 air wings on Ørland . The fighter base has undergone a large-scale modernization and development - with a longer runway, a new squadron building, maintenance building, shelters, hangars and supply buildings.
The fighter aircraft will support and supply the rest of the Armed Forces with combat power, information and surveillance. With superb abilities to hide and to fight air combat, the Armed Forces has increased its strike force and strengthened its ability to defend Norway.
On a daily basis, the F-35 from 2022 will solve the NATO mission Quick Reaction Alert (QRA) from Evenes . The mission means that two fighter jets are ready and are in the air within 15 minutes, if unknown aircraft come in the vicinity of Norwegian airspace. The F-35 will find, identify and document the unknown aircraft, and possibly prevent them from entering Norwegian airspace illegally.
Today, the F-16 does this job from Bodø, but in 2022 the F-16 will be retired. Three years later, the entire fighter fleet is in full operational operation.
