The Armed Forces of the Republic of Kazakhstan is the name of the unified armed forces of Kazakhstan. It consists of the Ground Forces, Air and Air Defence Forces, Naval Forces, and Republican Guard. The national defence policy aims are based on the Constitution of Kazakhstan. They guarantee the preservation of the independence and sovereignty of the state and the integrity of its land area, territorial waters and airspace and its constitutional order. The armed forces of Kazakhstan act under the authority of the Kazakhstan Ministry of Defence. The Military Balance 2013 reported the armed forces' strength as; Army, 20,000, Navy, 3,000, Air Force, 12,000, and MoD, 4,000. It also reported 31,000 paramilitary personnel. Today there are four regional commands: Regional Command Astana, Regional Command South at Taraz, Regional Command East at Semipalatinsk, Regional Command West at Aktobe, as well as the Air Defence Forces, the Airmobile Forces with four brigades, and the Artillery and Missile Forces (formed as a separate branch on 7 May 2003).

The Kazakh Air Defense Forces are the aviation warfare branch of the Armed Forces of the Republic of Kazakhstan. Their tasks include the insurance of the protection of the airspace of the republic as well as the fulfilment of combat missions for air support of other branches of the armed forces. The official holiday of the air forces is Aviation Day on August 18.

The Talgat Bigeldinov Military Institute of the Air Defence Forces serves as the only educational service of the air force, having trained cadets from foreign countries including Hungary, Kyrgyzstan and Afghanistan. On 17 November 1997, President Nursultan Nazarbayev issued a decree titled "On Further Measures for Reforming the Armed Forces of the Republic of Kazakhstan". As instructed by this, on 1 April 1998, the Minister of Defense, announced the creation of the Air Defense Forces of the Armed Forces, with the first day of operation being 1 June 1998. On 17 April 2008, the Commander-in-Chief of the Air Defense Forces announced August 18 would be celebrated as 'Aviation Day.

Air Force 12,000 (incl Air Defence) 1 air force division. Pilots fly approximately 100 hours per year. Today the Kazakh Air and Air Defence Force have four fast jet bases:
600th Guards Air Base, Zhetigen, Nikolayevka, Almaty
602nd Air Base, Chimkent,
604th Air Base, Taldykorgan Airport, (previously the 129th Fighter-Bomber Regiment)
610th Air Base, Sary-Arka Airport, Karaganda.

The Kazakh Ground Forces are the army service branch of the Armed Forces of the Republic of Kazakhstan. The Kazakh Army was founded on April 9, 1993, by the order of Defense Minister Sagadat Nurmagambetov. It followed the enacting of the law, "On Defense and Armed Forces of the Republic of Kazakhstan", which is the legal basis for the Kazakh military structures. The Kazakh Army was made up of the Soviet 32nd Army, which had been serving in the KSSR (Kazakh Soviet Socialist Republic) for many years before it came under Kazakh government control in May 1992.
In accordance with article 12 of the Law of the Republic of Kazakhstan dated April 9, 1993 "on defence and Armed Forces of the Republic of Kazakhstan", the Land forces consist of:
military administration bodies;
regional commands;
military branches
rear;
training and reserve units.
The main tasks of the Land Forces of the Armed Forces of the Republic of Kazakhstan are:
1. Maintaining the readiness of troops to repel aggression.
2. Armed protection of the territorial integrity and sovereignty of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
3. Protection and defence of state and military facilities.
4. defence of the State border on land.
5. The implementation of peacekeeping and other tasks.
Currently, the ground forces include four regional commands:
Regional Command "Astana" (HQ Karaganda)
Regional Command "East" (HQ Semey)
Regional Command "West" (HQ Atyrau)
Regional Command "South" (HQ Taraz)
Each of the commands has the following general composition:
One mechanized division (comprising three tank regiments and one artillery regiment)
One motor rifle division (comprising one tank brigade, two motor rifle regiments, and one artillery regiment)
One training centre with two motor rifle regiments
One motor rifle training regiment
One tank training regiment
One artillery regiment
Three independent motor rifle brigades
Two artillery brigades
One engineer brigade
These commands were all established in 2003.

The naval forces of Kazakhstan were created by decree of the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan on April 2, 1993. Initially, a naval base was formed in the city of Aktau. 

The navy mainly operates on the Caspian Sea and is currently based in the coastal city of Aktau.

The branch currently has a strength of 3,000 personnel and is mainly equipped with patrol crafts, minesweepers and research vessels. On May 7, 2003, the Decree of the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan No. 1085 "on measures to further improve the structure of the Armed Forces of the Republic of Kazakhstan" was issued.
From this moment, the Naval forces were finally formed as an independent type of the Armed Forces of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
In February 2010, President of Kazakhstan – Supreme commander of the Armed Forces of the Republic of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev handed over the Military Flag to the commander of the naval forces of Armed forces of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
Protection of the inviolability of the state border, territorial integrity, sovereignty and economic interests of the Republic of Kazakhstan in the Kazakhstan sector of the Caspian sea.
Repel attacks and defeat the aggressor, participate in the localization and suppression of armed conflicts.
Protection and defence of water areas, including port zones and platforms and artificial Islands with oil and gas production facilities located on them.
Conducting anti-water diversionary defence.
Provision of land forces operations from the sea, provision of amphibious landings, transportation of troops and materiel, and minesweeping of sea mines.
Conducting intelligence operations, including radar surveillance at sea in the interests of the country's air defence.
Implementation of joint defence tasks with the naval forces of the Caspian States by international agreements.
Wiring of oil-loading vessels (tankers) and other civil vessels.
Navigational hydrographic safety of navigation.
Implementation of search and rescue operations at sea in cooperation with the Ministry of emergencies of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
Working out combat training tasks together with formations and units of the Armed Forces, other troops and military formations of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
Assistance to the state bodies of the Republic of Kazakhstan in the implementation of their environmental and control functions, as well as in the elimination of the consequences of environmental disasters and disasters at sea.
